Internship #16

This internship immersion was an amazing experience and I enjoyed every minute of it, I have learned a lot about people with cognitive disablities and non-profit organization. The most significant experience I have had during internship would be getting the chance to TA classes with my stuents in the pictures above. I have gotten a chance to teach my students about relationships and personal space, my partner Noni Yeldell and I decided to make a video about the student and parent input about SEEDS organization and what the students have gotten out of it. I feel honored that my mentor trusted that Noni and I were mature enough to go to classes and help teach her students about things we "normal" people dont need repeptive teachings about.

Internship #14

Full name: Stacy Everson
Job Title: Founder, Teacher, Counseler.
Location: Old Town, 2707 congress street,San Diego, CA, Suite 1-R, 92110.

Stacy's Interview:

To answer your first question about cognitive disabilities: People are people. People with cognitive disabilities need assistance with understanding but they are capable of learning if given the information in a way that they can learn...

I decided to open SEEDS because I had seen sexual abuse with people with cognitive disabilities and there were no services for people with cognitive disabilities. I figured that I could do something and that is how we started

Non-profits are not difficult as long as you do not mine long hours and lots of work...You need to believe in what you do and why you do it...

SEEDS was started in 1987 we went non-profit in 2003

I love the people that I meet and the families and helping..

I went to Dominguez Hills State Univiersity and then went for national certification in Developmental Disabilities and Family Life Education

I majored in Nursing and I did not see me doing this at all...it was the sexual assaults that caused me to be in this field.

Internship # 13

When I first walked into the SEEDS class I was overwhelmed with all types of emotions I wasnt sure if the students wern't going to accept me. I stood in the corner silent until A student came p to me and said "Hi! Im John, whats your name?" I replied with "My name is Jasmine, nice to meet you Jhon I will be interning with you guys for the month" Jhon was then really excited and showed me around making me feel welcomed. This showed me to make everyone feel welcome and safe in a new environment.

My class I teach is no different from the one I attend at HTHMA they get side tracked and text when the teacher is talking but they learn different material, although they are older. I have been teaching my class about different realtionships and personal space. It is easy for them to get involved in class because they strive to learn the things that "normal" people know and they loved to be heard and praised.

These photos above show some of my students I teach on Tuesday nights, I have gotten the chance to learn about these students and know where they struggle most in relationships and their developmental disablities. These students have taught me to accept people for who they are and to learn patience when I feel I will loose it most. They have also taught me to apperciate the things I can do, the simple things like: Communicate rapidly, process words, understand relationship and boundaries without repetative lessons and activites. I have enjoyed every second I was with my kids and I am going to miss them.

Internship #12

In one work day it usually depends how many people I work with but if it is in the office it is just work done for Stacy, if I am teaching a class its usually 15 or more people I am working with and all the work I do affects everyone.

When i am working with others it differs from students to staff, with the students I am known as the one "in charge" and they pay attention to me and I give directions to them and teach class. When I am working with a staff member I am usually assigned various task to complete or activities to prepare for clas the following day.

There is no staff member that is not affected by my work since I do all types of Social Networking, Emailing, Faxing, Organizing, Filing, around the office and I contact staff members that are not in the office to remind them about upcoming events, classes, and other things the organization has planned. I feel that when I leave the office they will start using more technology since I opened my mentors eyes to simple things like Facebook and Twitter. These resources will help the organization better advertise their upcoming events.
